The wife of Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill accidentally left her semiautomatic rifle in the trunk of a rented car – horrifying the unsuspecting New York mother and daughter who discovered the gun.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Wednesday that the AR-15 rifle belongs to Ryan Tannehill and was left by "Hard Knocks" reality sports show personage and gun enthusiast Lauren Tannehill, 26, inside a zipped bag in the trunk of a rented white Nissan Rogue.
"Oh, my God, it's a gun," Judith Fleissig quoted her daughter as saying after she unzipped the mysterious abandoned bag. "I said, "I think I'm going to throw up.'"
"We were kind of freaked out," she added. "I didn't want to touch it."
Fleissig turned over the gun to the closest police station Jan. 6, and authorities determined the rifle was legally owned and accidentally left behind.
The Sun Sentinel said the Tannehills, married last January, had called E-Z Rent-A-Car to report a missing item, though they didn't say what was in the zipped bag, the newspaper reported.
"Though dangerous if it would have landed in the wrong hands, it's not criminal," Broward County sheriff's spokeswoman Keyla Concepción told the newspaper. "They simply forgot it."
Lauren Tannehill rented the car Jan. 4 and returned it two hours later at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Hours later, the car was rented to Fleissig, 58, of Rochester, N.Y., a sheriff's report said.
The AR-15, a popular semiautomatic weapon, was used by Adam Lanza in the Sandy Hook school massacre and by James E. Holmes in the 2012 Aurora, Colo., shooting rampage that killed 12 people, the New York Daily News reported.
The Tannehills view this as a personal matter, a Dolphins spokesman said Wednesday.
Lauren Tannehill has posted pictures on her Twitter account of her and her husband shooting together:
